Installation Rules (Paper 1)
Get exam-ready for Installation Rules Paper 1 with searchable chapters written around how the national paper is set. On the legislation side you’ll work through key parts of the OHS Act, the Electrical Installation Regulations (including certificates of compliance and registered persons), the Electrical Machinery Regulations, and the Construction Regulations that apply to electrical work on site.
From SANS 10142-1 the chapters cover fundamental requirements, special installations and locations, estimated and connected load, IP ratings, electricity supply systems, and Certificate of Compliance / test-report material. Cable selection and installation methods are covered under SANS 10198, with LV earthing under SANS 10292.
Jump from each topic to matching past exam questions, download PDFs for offline revision, and track what you’ve already covered so you always know what to study next.
One trimester for each examination (part time).
Two three hour national examination papers will be set comprising 100 marks each. No admission requirements are necessary.
The pass mark for Paper 1 and Paper 2 is 50%.
Both examination papers may be written during the same trimester period. However, candidates need not to pass both examinations during the same trimester, but the second examination must be passed within 12 months of the first, otherwise both examinations must be re-written. However, if a candidate obtains 75% of 100 marks in any one of the examinations, he or she will be permanently exempted from re-writing that examination. A minimum pass of 50% for each examination paper must be obtained in the instructional offering Installation Rules. An appropriate statement of results will be issued by the Department of Education.
For accreditation purposes, all candidates must also have proof of competence with regard to the required unit standards prescribed by the Department of Labour. The information brochure for registration is available on the Department of Labour’s website: http://www.labour.gov.za/documents/useful-documents/occupational-health-and-safety/information-brochure-for-application-of-accredited-person-for-electrical-installation
No condonation will be considered.
Taxonomies such as knowledge, understanding and application are important aspects of these examinations and the proportion of these in the question papers should be as follows:
During the examinations, tables for the applicable codes will be provided.
Paper 1 covers occupational health and safety legislation, SANS 10142-1 low-voltage wiring requirements (excluding Section 6 and Section 8), cable selection standards, and LV earthing.

Installation Rules (Paper 2) — code 11040432
Prep for Installation Rules Paper 2 with clear, searchable chapters on the practical work the exam rewards. The main focus is installation practice under SANS 10142-1 Section 6 — circuit arrangements, wiring systems, protection, earthing and bonding, and the practical requirements for putting an installation together correctly.
You’ll also work through Section 8 on verification and certification, including inspection, testing, and Certificate of Compliance work, plus supporting Ed 3.3 annexes (A, B, D, H, I, K, L — with notes where Paper 2 still uses older annex letters) covering voltage drop, surge protection (SPDs), arm’s reach, installation components, potential-danger notices, IT earthing and bonding, and medical-location safety services. Switchgear and controlgear assemblies are covered under SANS 1973-3.
Follow links to past exam questions where they apply, use the formulas and tables as you revise, and track what you’ve already covered.
